Re: Stock featuring

I ka wā ma mua,
ka wā ma hope

Sam & Nainoa collection

Creating footage that represents all of us.

Re: Stock is an ongoing initiative from Storyblocks, created as a reply to the demand for more diversity in our library. All too often indigenous people are painted into the past. This collection of footage from Sam Potter and Nainoa Langer shows Hawaiians actively shaping the modern world with traditional practices and values.

The future is secured by the past

This collection, I ka wā ma mua, ka wā ma hope, which translates to "the future is secured by the past," focuses on the work of Kumano I Ke Ala, a non-profit organization located on Kauaʻi in the ʻili of Kakalae, ahupuaʻa of Makaweli in the moku of Kona. Kumano I Ke Ala is building a foundation of Aloha ‘Āina (which literally means "love of the land") through Native Hawaiian cultural education, natural resource restoration, and sustainability for West Kaua’i.

The Re: Stock Initiative

Re: Stock is a response to the demand for content that more accurately reflects the world today from Storyblocks member comments, tweets, and emails, our own internal conversations, and the growing dialogue about the importance of representation in media.

Re: Stock actively and purposefully widens the pipeline by supporting underrepresented communities in front of and behind the camera. By hiring these filmmakers, the stock footage they create can capture genuine portrayals and experiences of people of different races, ethnicities, sexual orientations, ages, religions, abilities and more.

As part of the Re: Stock initiative, Storyblocks teamed up with Sam Potter and Nainoa Langer, as well as four Indigenous filmmakers to produce collections of footage that show authentic representations of the different communities that make up the Indigenous population, while also remaining true to the intersectional foundation of the community by exploring themes of race, sexuality, and gender. About The Creators

Sam Potter

"I feel like Hawaiʻi as a whole has been misrepresented. There are lessons and teachings here that the world needs to hear, and I am proud to have the opportunity to document them being Kanaka, doing what they love, representing them how they want to be represented, not changing anything. I think that's powerful, and hardly happens."
